Ο «άτλαντας» άντεξε μόνο για τα παιδιά του ,Αθήνα σεισμός '99.

Είχε στήσει τη ζωή του στην οδό Τατοΐου στη Μεταμόρφωση. Ήταν ο αγαθός γίγαντας για τους γείτονες. Τον φώναζαν Πανάγο. Τον αγαπούσαν. Από τα ερείπια του σπιτιού του οι πυροσβέστες ανέσυραν ζωντανά τα δύο παιδιά του. Ένας άνδρας της ΕΜΑΚ είπε ότι τα έσωσε ένας εύσωμος άνδρας. Ο Παναγιώτης Πολυκανδριώτης ήταν ο πατέρας τους. Τα έβαλε κάτω από τα χέρια του, κράτησε όσο μπορούσε μακριά τους τα τσιμέντα. Ήταν «γερός άντρας», άντεξε όση ώρα χρειαζόταν. Τα παιδιά του βγήκαν ζωντανά.

Ο ίδιος δεν τα κατάφερε. Τα σωστικά συνεργεία τον ανέσυραν νεκρό. Οι γείτονες έκλαψαν. Η προσπάθειά του συγκίνησε την Ελλάδα. Όπως συγκίνησε την Ελλάδα η περιπέτεια του άλλου παιδιού, του 11χρονου Τζαννή, που έμεινε θαμμένος σε ένα άλλο δωμάτιο του σπιτιού του για 24 ώρες. Εκεί δεν πρόλαβε να φθάσει ο πατέρας. Έφθασαν όμως οι άντρες της ΕΜΑΚ ύστερα από πολύωρες προσπάθειες. Τον έσωσαν. Μόνο που ο Πανάγος δεν θα το μάθει ποτέ, όπως δεν έμαθε αν το δύο κοριτσάκια του βγήκαν ζωντανά από τα ερείπια...

Τελικά οι πραγματικοί ήρωες βρίσκονται εκεί έξω, στην καθημερινότητα μας.
